"La Veuve joyeuse" is conceived here as very much an operetta rather than an opera. All the voices are good in a cast generally assembled more for brightness and agility than for sonority. This is particularly true of Michelline Dax, an admirable Widow with a bright, ingenue-ish sound/5(5).

The heroine of La Veuve Joyeuse is called Missia Palmieri, but she had started off in as Hanna Glawari in Vienna, where this operetta is known as Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow); its French permiere followed in /5(31).

The first production in Paris was at the Théâtre Apollo on 28 April as La Veuve joyeuse. Although Parisians were worried about how their city would be portrayed in the operetta, the Paris production was well received and ran for performances.
